We...
We, basically, like bikes. Good bikes. Great bikes. Old bikes. Newer bikes. Folding Bikes. Bikes with soul.
We like riding them, we like collecting them, we like putting other people on them. We just like bikes. Particularly European brands like Colnago, Look, Pinarello, Peugeot.
We (why am I saying We like the Royal We? It's just me, Peter!) like learning about the differences, what makes a quality frame or component different from a piece of junk.
We errrh I lived in France for a decade and got the cycling bug over there. It's an amazing thing to ride quiet country roads undisturbed. And even if you have to use a busier road, Europe has such a deep, steeped tradition of cycling -- there is probably a cyclist in every family like we have a hockey player in every family -- that even cars have great respect for cyclists.
While there have been cyclists in North America for decades, compared to Europe, it has been a drop in the bucket. France, Italy and the Benelux have one hundred years of cycling history.
Unfortunately what most North American cyclists see for sale is mass-produced frames, made by robots in Asia. Not bad necessarily (though sometimes the bikes people pay money for are truly atrocious). But they have no soul.
But for decades, the heart of the cycling world has been Europe. And the great bicycle factories were all found in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy. We rarely see the most famous brands here - Colnago, Gazelle, Pinarello, Peugeot, Mercier, Look, Eddy Merckx.
